Aug 27 - Tarot Characters: Four of Cups

🃏 The Four of Cups is about apathy, boredom and being generally fed up. The world hasn't changed; we've just closed our eyes to what it's offering us. Here are three characters who capture different sides of this card:

Flynn Carson (The Librarian)

In the Curse of the Judas Chalice, Flynn is surrounded by wonder and magic on all sides - and he's completely, utterly fed up with all of it. The Library hasn't changed, but Flynn is unable to see it as he once did until he changes his thinking and learns to appreciate it once again.

Four of Cups Vibes:

  • Takes wonder for granted
  • Lets dissatisfaction blind him to what he has
  • Rediscovers what he had been overlooking

Walter White (Breaking Bad)

When Walter is offered a buyout from Gray Matter that would cover his medical treatment, he refuses. The offer could solve one of the problems consuming him, but accepting it would mean accepting help from people whose success and generosity he resents. His pride blinds him to the cup being offered.

Four of Cups Vibes:

  • Rejects an offer because of how it feels, not what it provides
  • Lets resentment obscure an obvious solution
  • Cannot accept help on someone else's terms

Thorin Oakenshield (The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies)

Although he has a slight excuse, Thorin sits here for his behaviour after reclaiming the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. Sitting on a horde of gold and jewels worth more than the rest of Middle Earth combined, Thorin becomes obsessed with the one thing he doesn't have: the Arkenstone. He refuses to pay his debts or acknowledge his responsibilities to Laketown, allowing his fixation on what is missing to blind him to everything he already possesses.

Four of Cups Vibes:
  • Focuses on what he lacks rather than what he has
  • Lets obsession obscure his responsibilities
  • Becomes unable to see the value of what is already within reach
