Jul 10 - Tarot Characters: The Devil (Pop Culture)

๐Ÿƒ The Devil may look like the big red guy from Christian teachings, but there's far more to him than that. He warns against allowing yourself to be controlled, about indulgence becoming greed, against believing the shine without looking for the shadow. Here are three characters who capture different sides of this card:

Ares (Xena and Hercules)

The Greek god of war, bloodshed and the thrill of victory. Ares groomed Xena into the perfect warlord and never really forgave her for turning her back on him. They spent years engaged in a dance where he tried to tempt, blackmail or entice her back to his side. Ares is the Devil as temptation to something you know is wrong, but feels good.

Devil Vibes:

  • Tempts people with the power they already crave
  • Turns strength into cruelty
  • Never lets someone forget what they used to be

Jareth, the Goblin King (Labyrinth)

Jareth represents the Devil as fantasy. He offers Sarah anything she wants, but it's all an illusion; accepting would mean binding herself to obey him. Even his first offer, a magical crystal, can only show her her dreams, not bring them to her. He reminds us that the Devil's offerings rarely have any real value.

Devil Vibes:

  • Makes temptation look beautiful
  • Offers dreams instead of reality
  • Hides the cost behind the desire

Hades (Disney's Hercules)

I know. The King of the Underworld is a bit obvious for this one. But it's not Hades' job that's placed him here; it's the way he goes about it. Hades is a salesman, and his victims never realise just what they've promised until it's too late. "You can have anything you want...and in return..." He reminds us that the Devil is a trickster, a liar who uses our own beliefs against us.

Devil Vibes:
  • Makes dangerous bargains sound reasonable
  • Uses charm to hide his true intentions
  • Knows exactly what people want - and how to exploit it

The Devil Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

God knows I want to break free!

The Devil speaks to the moments when we feel stuck - old habits, lingering fears, or temptations that look sweeter than they are. In traditional decks he appears as the horned figure of Christian lore; in modern decks he’s often softened, reframed, or even renamed, but the core idea remains: what holds us back, and how do we reclaim our power?

1. Stained Glass Tarot — Christian Beauty

The Stained Glass Tarot draws on the luminous beauty of cathedral windows, casting each card in jewel-bright colour. Here, The Devil appears in a classic form - red skin, wings, horns - framed in stained glass intensity.

The Devil Vibes:
๐Ÿ”ฅ Key themes: addiction, entrapment, fear
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: heavy, intense, claustrophobic
✨ Unique: a traditional Devil staring directly at the viewer, unblinking

2. Everyday Witch — Everyday Temptations

In the Everyday Witch Tarot, the Devil is far more approachable: a seemingly normal figure offering treats and money to two distracted young people. The cats, as always, know better - ears back, tails twitching, trying to steer their humans away.

The Devil Vibes:
๐Ÿงช Key themes: temptation, distraction, uncertainty
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: uneasy, slightly comical, gently cautionary
✨ Unique: the Devil blends in at first… until you notice the tail

3. Cosy Witch Tarot — A Brighter Reframing

This modern deck renames several cards for inclusivity and warmth. The Devil becomes The Broom, shifting focus from bondage to liberation: sweeping out outdated patterns and clearing space for something better.

The Devil Vibes:
๐ŸŒฟ Key themes: taking action, freeing yourself, reclaiming power
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: hopeful, energising, bright
✨ Unique: reframes The Devil entirely - freedom through small, intentional action

Reflection:

Across these decks, The Devil shifts from fearsome captor to sneaky tempter to a symbol of self-liberation. Each asks a different question: What binds you? What tempts you? What can you clear away today?

Nothing is stronger than we are.

Oct 14 - Tarot Characters: Nine of Pentacles

๐Ÿƒ The Nine of Pentacles is the card of security, safety and success. It might be temporary, but for at least that moment, things are right ...
