Oct 11 - Ace of Swords (images)

Ace of Swords Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

And at last I see the light, and it's like a fog has lifted

The Ace of Swords shows us the moment when the flash of inspiration hits; that beautiful, bright idea that makes perfect sense, before we have to start prodding at it to try and make it work. In RWS this is a hand holding a sword, but modern artists have used different images to convey the idea.

1. Gaian Tarot — Natural beauty

The Gaian deck shows us a butterfly, fresh out of its cocoon. It's ready to explore the world and see what's waiting for it.

Ace of Air Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Awakening, discovery, new perspective

  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Wonder, hope, anticipation

  • ✨ Unique: Emerging into a world of new possibilities

2. Da Vinci Tarot — History inspired

Inspired by the artwork of the great da Vinci, this Ace shows a horseman striking down a dragon or lizard. He's taking initiative and moving forward.

Ace of Swords Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Initiative, decisiveness, overcoming obstacles

  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Bold, forceful, determined

  • ✨ Unique: Turning clarity into action

3. cosy witch — cosy and gentle

The cosy witch shows a hand holding a tiny sword, while the mantra says it all - 'look at you-you're bursting with sparkly new ideas!' The hand is relaxed and calm; this isn't overwhelm, the ideas are welcome.

Ace of Swords Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Inspiration, creativity, fresh ideas

  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Light-hearted, welcoming, excited

  • ✨ Unique: Making room for ideas to arrive without being overwhelmed by them

Tarot decks come in all shapes and sizes nowadays - massive, tiny, even round! You can often get the same deck in different sizes. For this specific comparison I've chosen the Supernatural deck, but there are plenty of other comparison.

Oct 8 - Queen of Cups (images)

Queen of Cups Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

I will try to fix you.

The Queen of Cups is one of the deck's two mothers; caring, compassionate, loving. Classic decks tend to focus more on the 'queen' aspect, but some modern ones are adapting that!

1. Light Seers — Modern and boho

This queen is literally surrounded by her element, waist deep in it. But it's not overtaking her. She's comfortable where she is.

Queen of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Emotional awareness, intuition, acceptance
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Calm, open, grounded
  • ✨ Unique: Being completely at home in your emotional world

2. RWS — Classic depiction

This version is all about the 'queen', showing her seated on a throne and examining the cup she's holding. The water is near her, but not touching.

Queen of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Reflection, wisdom, emotional depth
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Contemplative, thoughtful, serene
  • ✨ Unique: Looking deeply into the cup of emotion before responding

Queen of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Nurturing, family, compassion
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Loving, tender, protective
  • ✨ Unique: Carrying the people she loves with her wherever she goes

The Moon Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

I'm afraid of what I'm risking if I follow you into the unknown

The Moon is the card of secrets held and revealed, of uncertainty and mystery, and of choosing whether to continue without knowing all the answers. Traditionally it shows a crayfish rising out of the water under a moon - but some artists stray a little from that.

1. Sante Muerte — Cultural design

A young woman crouches over a body of water with the moon reflected in it. Her own reflection reveals a terrible truth - not a healthy woman but a skeleton looks back at her. The moon can bring hidden secrets to light whether we want it to or not.

It can be wonderful or terrifying, but it usually ends up changing everything. Across decks artists have represented this in a number of different ways.

1. Enchanted Forest Felines — Animal magic

Perched in the fold of a tree, this cat eyes the horizon and wonders what's coming next. So far the plan has worked great - he's up in the tree! As for the next thing? He'll have to wait and see.

Sep 17 - The Hermit (images)

The Hermit Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

Shine your light down on me

The Hermit is the card of quiet withdrawal and contemplation, study and learning. He teaches others to follow his path and devotes his life to study. The classic example looks rather like a monk, but modern artists have found some interesting ways to show the same idea.

1. Stained Glass Tarot — Colourful and haunting

This is quite a classic version, showing a bearded man in a robe holding a torch. The colours around the edges of the design are unique to this version and add some life to the card.

Hermit Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Solitude, wisdom, study
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Quiet, contemplative, mysterious
  • ✨ Unique: Carrying your own light through the darkness

2. Light Seer's — Modern and bright

This card shows a young woman sitting atop a cliff, contemplating life. The path she took is still lit up behind her, and there's a sense that this withdrawal is temporary; she'll rejoin the world when she's worked through her current feelings.

Hermit Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Reflection, inner guidance, perspective
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Peaceful, thoughtful, hopeful
  • ✨ Unique: Stepping away so you can find your way forward

3. Cosmic C*nt Tarot — 50s kitsch

The Hermit who is most like me across all my decks. Sitting on a bed, wrapped in a blanket and clutching a drink, this is very much the modern overwhelm version of the card. Who hasn't felt the need to duvet now and then?

Hermit Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Rest, retreat, boundaries
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Cosy, overwhelmed, unapologetically withdrawn
  • ✨ Unique: Finding clarity from underneath the duvet

Reflection:
Across decks, the Hermit shows how reflection and solitude can guide us towards clarity. Sometimes a step back and a deep breath is the only path forward. What part of your life needs a pause right now?

Sep 12 - Eight of Cups (images)

Eight of Cups Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

Don't go in fear. Go with that lovely smile.

The Eight of Cups is about walking away. What you were doing is finished and there's no point trying to force any more from it. It's time to look towards the horizon and move on to newer things.

1. Sugar Skull Tarot — Western and gritty

This cowboy rides away from eight perfect cups. The draw of what's ahead must be very strong to entice him to leave them behind.

Eight of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Departure, choice, seeking something more
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Restless, determined, quietly hopeful
  • ✨ Unique: Leaving behind the comfortable to follow the road ahead

2. Unfolding Path — Modern and clear

There's something almost jaunty in the way this man adjusts his hat as he strides away. The cups behind him have fallen over, but he doesn't look back as he walks towards his future.

Eight of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Moving forward, release, new horizons
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Light-hearted, confident, optimistic
  • ✨ Unique: Knowing when to stop looking back

3. Patch Tarot — Colourful and deep

The five cups being left behind are leaky and dripping - no longer fit for what he needs. Ahead of him are three imaginary new cups; he's looking forward to finding them as he travels.

Eight of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Outgrowing, possibility, seeking fulfilment
  • ๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Thoughtful, adventurous, expectant
  • ✨ Unique: Trusting that something better can be found, even when you can't see it yet

Aug 31 - 3 of Pentacles (images)

3 of Pentacles Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

I get by with a little help from my friends

The Three of Pentacles is the card of teamwork, collaboration and shared expertise. Traditionally, it's shown as skilled craftspeople working together, but modern decks use all sorts of settings to show what happens when people bring their different skills together.

1. Unfolding Path — Modern and bright

Bees are some of nature's most famous team players, and this card brings that idea to life with honeycomb, an orchard in bloom, and a young worker learning from an older one. It's a bright, modern take on the traditional meaning of the card.

3 of Pentacles Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Teamwork, mentorship, shared knowledge, craftsmanship
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Warm, productive, encouraging
✨ Unique: The bees make the collaborative nature of the card literal, while the older worker teaching the younger one adds the idea that skills are passed from one generation to the next.

2. Witch's Cat — Cute but meaningful

The Witch's Cat shows three paws, each contributing an ingredient to help the plant in the centre grow. They're working together to create something new.

3 of Pentacles Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Cooperation, contribution, growth, shared purpose
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Playful, hopeful, nurturing
✨ Unique: Each cat contributes something different, showing that teamwork doesn't mean everyone doing the same thing. The finished creation depends on all three.

3. Tarot Draconis — Scary but honest

Although the huge looming dragon could be a bit distracting in this card, he seems to be offering advice to the stone carver, who's concentrating hard on his work. Advice can come from anywhere, even an unusual source, and still be valued.

3 of Pentacles Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Learning, mentorship, expertise, openness
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Curious, thoughtful, slightly mysterious
✨ Unique: The teacher is an enormous dragon rather than another human craftsperson, reminding us that useful knowledge can come from unexpected places.

Reflection:
Across decks, the 3 of Pentacles emphasises the value of working together and honing skills. It shows us that learning from each other lifts us all. Who can you teach, or learn from, today?

Aug 23 - Knight of Swords

Knight of Swords Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

I'm a shooting star, leaping through the sky like a tiger

The Knight of Swords is the fastest moving card in the deck. This knight is capable of making plans, but he's usually moving faster than his thoughts can keep up with, which makes him look careless. He's not necessarily careless; he's just passionate enough to forget that other people might need time to catch up.

1. Light Seer's — Modern and bright

The Knight of Swords has places to be. His motorbike will get him there, once he gets on it. He never stops moving, always heading for the next thing.

Knight of Swords Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Momentum, ambition, action, determination
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Energetic, impatient, enthusiastic
✨ Unique: The motorbike captures the Knight's need to keep moving. The journey itself almost matters as much as the destination.

2. Out of Hand Tarot — POV cards

In this deck all the cards are drawn as if the viewer is in them. The Knight of Swords is campaigning for something he believes in, fighting for his passions.

Knight of Swords Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Conviction, advocacy, passion, courage
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Fired-up, determined, confrontational
✨ Unique: Putting the viewer directly into the scene makes the Knight's urgency feel personal. You're not watching someone fight for a cause - you've joined them.

3. Anima Mundi — Natural power

Birds and feathers are often used to represent swords because of their speed. In the Anima Mundi deck, the Knight of Swords is a diving peregrin falcon - the fastest animal on Earth. Its eyes are locked on its target and it is completely focused.

Knight of Swords Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Speed, focus, precision, decisive action
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Intense, powerful, utterly focused
✨ Unique: The peregrine falcon takes the Knight's speed literally, but its locked-on gaze adds the other crucial element: this isn't just movement, it's movement with a target.

Reflection:
Across decks, the Knight of Swords shows rapid action and clarity of purpose. He moves towards what he wants without allowing doubt or confusion to slow his way. What are you passionate enough about to stop waiting for?

Aug 16 - Six of Cups (Images)

Six of Cups Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

I will remember the path that led me here, through the garden of my younger years.

The 6 of Cups is the card of nostalgia, childhood innocence and remembrance. Across decks, it's usually presented as children enjoying flowers in a courtyard, but some decks present it differently.

1. RWS — Classic image

In this version a boy presents some flowers to a girl. The focus is on carefree enjoyment; they're not worrying about the future or what might happen later.

6 of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Childhood, innocence, generosity, nostalgia
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Gentle, sweet, carefree

✨ Unique: The simplicity of the scene keeps the focus on uncomplicated childhood joy and the pleasure of sharing it.

2. Transient Light — Minimalist fun

The Transient Light cuts out all the details to focus on the meaning. In the Six of Vessels, six trunks open to reveal clocks, photos and jewelry - the remains of a life well lived.

Six of Vessels Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Memory, experience, the past, treasured moments
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Reflective, wistful, quietly joyful
✨ Unique: Instead of depicting childhood itself, the open trunks suggest a lifetime of memories packed away for us to revisit.

3. Gaian Tarot — Natural magic

In the Gaian Tarot nature is celebrated. The Six of Water shows a group of friends playing in a lake, capturing the spirit of their youth. Notably there are only five of them - the sixth figure is a seal swimming by, emphasizing the connection to nature.

Six of Water Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Friendship, play, connection, belonging
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Joyful, carefree, exuberant
✨ Unique: The seal becomes part of the group, reminding us that playfulness and connection aren't exclusively human experiences.

Reflection:
Across decks, the 6 of Cups encourages remembering joy and reconnecting with childhood joys. What part of your life could do with some joy today?

Aug 14 - Minimalist Decks

“Sometimes less is more, and in tarot, clarity can come from a single line or a whisper of shadow.”

Minimalist tarot decks strip away the ornate, focusing on clean lines and essential symbolism. Let's explore three decks that embody this approach:

  • Clarity Tarot (Watkins): Combines minimalist design with evocative imagery, offering a fresh perspective on traditional tarot themes.

  • Transient Light Tarot (Hay House): Features ethereal, minimalist art that emphasizes light and shadow, perfect for introspective readings.

  • Minimalist Tarot Deck (Katie Troisi): A black-and-white deck that reimagines Rider-Waite symbolism with contemporary simplicity, highlighting the essence of each card.

All three decks use simplicity to enhance depth, providing clarity and focus in every reading. They’re perfect for readers who want to strip away distractions and engage directly with tarot’s core symbolism.

Verdict: Minimalism in tarot proves that elegance and insight don’t require ornamentation - just clean design, thoughtful symbolism, and a little imagination.

Aug 5 - The Magician (images)

The Magician Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

I can chase the wind

The Magician is the force of creation, of imagination made real and possibilities spoken into being. He never says 'I can't' - he says 'what if I could?' Across decks, artists represent this in different ways.

1. Witches Tarot — Classic inspired

This deck is based closely on RWS imagery, with a magician standing over a table holding his elements. This version is a bit more dramatic than the usual, with huge arm movements and a storm brewing in the background, but the classic elements are all there.

Magician Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Creation, willpower, skill, manifestation
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Powerful, dramatic, energetic
✨ Unique: The storm around the Magician emphasises that this is active creation - he isn't waiting for magic to happen; he's making it happen.

2. Witch's Cat — Cute and meaningful

This Magician is more like the wise guide of stories, watching with a benevolent look. He's ready to make his move, but he's letting us try first.

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Guidance, potential, learning, hidden ability
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Patient, encouraging, wise

Magician Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Curiosity, confidence, experimentation, play
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Joyful, mischievous, carefree
✨ Unique: It reminds us that creation doesn't always begin with a grand plan. Sometimes it begins with "what happens if I try this?"

King of Cups Across Decks ๐ŸŽด✨

I will try to fix you

Surrounded by his element but never consumed by it, the King of Cups has learned how to control his emotions. He's now a mentor to others, a leader and peacekeeper.

1. Arcanum Tarot — Traditional and colourful

Watery imagery abounds in this card, from the deep blues of his outfit to the fish swimming around his feet. This King is confident and assured as he looks over his kingdom.

King of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Emotional maturity, leadership, compassion, wisdom
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Calm, dignified, reassuring
✨ Unique: This version leans into the traditional ruler imagery, showing a King who commands respect without needing to dominate. His strength comes from understanding.

2. Light Seer's — Modern and boho

The Light Seer's King is even closer to his element, sitting crosslegged in the sea itself. This is the kind of King you could walk up to and have a chat - approachable, not distant.

King of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Empathy, emotional openness, healing, connection
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Warm, approachable, peaceful
✨ Unique: By placing the King directly in the water, this card shows that emotional depth doesn't have to create distance. A wise person can still be someone you sit and talk with.

3. Gaian Tarot — Nature's magic

The Elder of Water rests his oars for a moment while admiring the beautiful sky above him. He reminds us that being the king doesn't mean the page is left behind - we can still marvel at the beauty around us.

King of Cups Vibes:

  • ๐Ÿงช Key themes: Reflection, intuition, emotional wisdom, harmony
๐ŸŽจ Emotional tone: Serene, contemplative, inspired
✨ Unique: The Elder of Water reminds us that mastery doesn't mean losing curiosity. Even after a lifetime of experience, there is still room to be amazed.
